Document Summary

Lecture 20: carbohydrate metabolism i: glycolysis: glucose uptake, glycolysis: step-by-step, energy balance of glycolysis, aerobic vs. anaerobic conditions. Glycolysis is the conversion of glucose to pyruvate, it srates with the glucose uptake. It is mediated with each cell by glut transporters. These trasnporters don"t require energy just faicilitate the movement of glucose in/out of the membrane. The glucose can go into the cell or come out again by these tarnsporters. As soon as glucose gets phosphorylated, the g-6-p cannot go out of the cell. It is an irreversible reaction retains glucose inside of the cell. The facilitated diffusion: higher to lower concentration because it diffuses down the c. g. so that it doesn"t cost energy. The energy of this iss determined by the entropy component fo the free energy. There is no enthalpy difference glucose on either side. The entropy is always higher on the side with the lower concentration. Hence, it goes from high to low to increase entropy.
