BIOL 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Nuclear Membrane, Ribose, Hydrogenation
Document Summary
Robert hooke coined the term cell (due to orderly, lined up orientation). Hooke worked with the first microscopes, examining cork tissue. 1670"s: anton van leeuwenhoek made many microscopes and looked at everything. (pond water, blood, teeth scrapings, was the first person to document sperm). Leeuwenhoek is considered the father of microbiology and coined the term animalcules and also recorded his findings with drawings and detailed letters of his observations. 1838: schleiden & schwann (germans): all organisms composed of one or more cells, the cell is the structural unit of life. 1855: virchow added the third component: cells can only arise by division from a pre-existing cell. Types of cells: prokaryotic: no nucleus, floating dna. *cells are very small: there are 1000 microns ( m) in 1mm. Not all organisms have only one nucleus, some have no nucleus (red blood cells) and some are multinucleated (skeletal muscles).
