Document Summary

The gradual change in plant and animal communiies ater a disturbance event. Pioneer species: the irst species in an area ater a disturbance event. Climax community: a community that is late in its successional stage and will remain stable unil a disturbance event. Aquaic to terrestrial: sedimentaion can cause shallow lakes to become bogs or terrestrial forests (depending on how much water is there and what the ph is, very slow change. Increase in richness and diversity: will follow a saturaion curve unil no more species are being added, very slow process. Change in species composiion: changes from less permanent species, change from r-strategists to k-strategists (rapid colonizers to very good compeitors) Increase in primary producion, nutrient retenion and respiraion: succession helps to retain nutrients through growth as the mature community will deplete the nutrient greatly. The physical structure and funcioning can change too (ex. amount of soil)
