Same epithets used for gods and heroes. Written in style of homer: some features suggest that the hymns are younger than the epics. Vocabulary re ects slightly later period than that of homer: hymns roughly written between 700-500 bce, data unclear. Hymn" is a direct translation of hymnos = a song composed in honour of a god or goddess: homeric hymns are the best and earliest examples, uncertain usage in antiquity, probably a preamble to longer myths. Performed, sung or recited to rhythm: not musical melodies but tones of recitation, certain characteristics hint at the idea of them being preludes.
