November 14/11 Parthenon ­ Athens started to get great in the arts: tragedy, comedy ­ Philosophy, Socrates etc ­ Arts expanded: Sculptures, paintings, pottery etc. ­ Athenian Golden Age­ time of Parthenon ­ Wealth and power in Athens ­ Temple building is part of a competitive culture b/w city states o Use to show off the stories, wealth ­ Temple of Zeus was the best  ­ Parthenon was built in middle of fifth century o Pericules was the general who said to beautify Athens ­ Acropolis destroyed by Persian battle  ­ Pericles building program­ beautifying city by using Athenian goods to beautify  acropolis ­ Most of building still there except roof was blown off by explosions ­ Parthenon center of city ­ Nike= victory  ▯smaller temple ­ Statues painted garish colours ▯ not romantic white or marble ­ Blueprint of Parthenon was distinct and strict o Some imperfections to make structure appear perfect ­ Base of columns larger than the top o A tactic to make it look more perfect ­ Most sculptures than any other structures ­ Whole Pa
