Solar Energy
March 10, 2015
What is solar energy? Solar energy approaches the earth as electromagnetic
radiation in a variety of wavelengths (Ultra-violet to infra-red).
Solar energy is the driving mechanism behind other renewable energy sources such
as wind, hydropower, biomass and animal power.
Variation of terrestrial solar energy is dependent on:
Time of day (position of the sun in the sky)
Time of year (position of sun in respect to the Earth)
Capturing Solar Energy:
1. Passive Solar
2. Solar Thermal Hot Water
3. Solar Photovoltaic Electricity
Concentrating Solar Collectors:
Parabolic trough
Parabolic dish
Solar Thermal: Active (uses pumps) and Passive systems
Flat Plate Collectors
Evacuated Tube Collectors
Deliver higher temperatures
Solar water heating systems have components for heat collection, heat storage, heat
delivery and freeze protection. Active systems need controls for pump operation
and valves for safety and proper operation.
Solar Photovoltaic
1. Monocrystalline Silicon (mono-Si)
2. Polycrystalline Silicon (poly-Si)
3. Amorphous Silicon (a-Si)
New technology: solar cell roof tiles
Solar energy provides small-scale generation of electricity in regions not serviced by
a power grid.

Solar energy is the driving mechanism behind other renewable energy sources such as wind, hydropower, biomass and animal power. Variation of terrestrial solar energy is dependent on: time of day (position of the sun in the sky, time of year (position of sun in respect to the earth) Capturing solar energy: passive solar, solar thermal hot water, solar photovoltaic electricity. Concentrating solar collectors: parabolic trough, parabolic dish. Solar thermal: active (uses pumps) and passive systems. Solar water heating systems have components for heat collection, heat storage, heat delivery and freeze protection. Active systems need controls for pump operation and valves for safety and proper operation. Solar photovoltaic: monocrystalline silicon (mono-si, polycrystalline silicon (poly-si, amorphous silicon (a-si) Solar energy provides small-scale generation of electricity in regions not serviced by a power grid.
