A 53 yr old male presents to the ed with a 3-day history of increased sob and right sided pleuritic chest pain. He is febrile (fever - 40. 1 c) and crackles were heard on exam: chest x-ray shows a left lower consolidation, pmhx significant for copd (fev1 >65%). Diagnostic - detection of infectious agents: diagnosis (culture / serology / molecular / proteomics, guidance for treatment susceptibility testing, outbreak detection, support for infection control, collect and collate information (from large datasets gathered each day)
