Big business - and plays a large role in society. Explicit religion, sometimes official (if affiliated with church) sometimes non-official (ex. Implicit if not obvious but does have religious connotations if you really listen to the lyrics (supernatural beings, religious content) Official religion has many forms - from state sponsored religious institutions to small extreme groups (sect, denomination, cult) Non-official religion has many forms - from personal spirituality to new age. Churches are organizations in which people are born and baptized. In many ways the church type community embraces the society in which it lives (compensators, linked to established status quo, government and society) Churches are often conservative of the social order and accommodating to the secular world (linked to ruling elite) The church is often associated with the interests and concerns of the dominant class. All kinds of people belong to churches. Their membership is heterogeneous (diverse in characters)
