Document Summary

The change of ads from 1930 and appropriation. Advertisements of white people in black people clothing and vice versa with black people in white clothes. Back then, white wanted to look urbanized while black wanted to look wealthy white. Cool is the epitimy of the desired status. Within the new world wher class, ethnicity , race and etc. doesn"t matter as much than something else would come in to create a class being cool. There is a misconception that the mass media sells uniformity , mass media actually sells individuality. What has changed? from ads in the 1930s to today. Cool happened in the 1950s: the discovery of the teenager, cool is positional. What isn"t cool today isn"t cool tomorrow: 3 core pillars of cool. Ad is a structure where meaning can be transferred from one signifying system to another ( hasn"t changed)
