Document Summary

Hard case for vital organs (i. e. brain, lungs, heart) Red bone marrow red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets. Regions that contain the epiphyseal plate (in growing bones)/ epiphyseal line (in adults) If growth plate is damaged, that side stops growing. Periosteum - 2 layered protective membrane outside of the bone. Inner osteogenic layer - gives rise to bone cells except osteoclasts. Highly supplied with nerve fibers, blood, and lymphatic vessels. Medullary cavity - space in center of diaphysis. Endosteum - membrane that lines the medullary cavity. Nutrient foramen - opening in the shaft (usually mid-shaft) Blood vessels enter to supply medullary cavity with nutrients. Acts to increase angle of pull of muscle. All are aligned in the same direction of line of force applied to bone. Lamellae are arranged in lattice of thin beams - trabeculae. Mature cells (formed when osteoblasts become entrapped in matrix) Large cells derived from fusion of monocytes (type of white blood cell)
