What is “self”?
Soul is Immortal: Socrates and Plato
The self is an immortal soul that exists over time.
Socrates: first thinker to focus the full power of reason on the human self
o Realty is dualistic; two dichotomous realms
o One realm is changeable, transient, imperfect; other is unchanging, eternal, immortal
o Physical world belongs to changeable realm
o Unchanging realm: truth, goodness, beauty, etc.
o Our bodies belong to physical realm souls belong in ideal realm
o Soul is unified, indissoluble, immortal entity that remains the same over time Plato: committed to Socrates’ view on self, but recognizes
difficulties with it
o How is it possible to say that the self remains the same when every self is defined by
process of continual change and evolution?
