Urban began to preach the first crusade at a council in clermont in 1095. He presented it as a holy war: a changed europe. In the late 12th century, latin europe had changed. The first 3 crusades were taking place alongside cultural shifts. There were multiple renaissances in the middle ages. Reform led by popes and monks: active church. After leo ix, the latin church became more active in society. New religious orders and scholarly movements were founded.
