By the end of the 18th century, britain had gained a massive territorial empire in the east. The eic adopted functions of a state later on as well: company state. Starting in the 1750s, the eic company starts gaining political power in india, collects taxes, and enforces law. Mostly involved local princes trying to buy for power as the mughal empire began to crumble. Joseph francois dupleix: a governor general of french india. Fought against the british eic in southern india during the carnatic wars (1764-63). The french east indies company was jousting with the eic for influence over regional leaders. Robert clive: rival to dupleix, commander-in-chief of the eic"s army, governor of bengal"s. Presidency, and later a tory member of parliament. Siraj-ud-daulah: nawab of bengal, captures fort william in a surprise raid in 1756. Eic were not paying taxes and increasing their fortifications.
