Document Summary
Angles vs internods wide angles = short internodes; narrow angles = long internodes. Leaves are mostly flat to intercept max light (optimize surface), with chlorophyll- containing cells concentrated on upper part of leaf interior. Sheath (like the stem), blade (like the leaf), ligule/auricle (at leafstalk), parallel venation in monocot leaves (i. e. leaf veins) Nearly vertical and have no distinction of upper and lower parts of leaf both sides intercept light. Axillary bud in the axil of a leaf from which side branch grows out (no bud in leaflet) Opposite, whorled (multiple from each point), alternate (1 on each point), rosette (spiral-like) Opening controlled by hydrostatic pressure in guard cells. Can be modified to store food (onions, garlic) Can be modified as tendrils for climbing (peas) Can be modified into a pitcher in carnivorous plants. Stipules are wing-like expansions at the base of the leaf attached to stem. Angiosperms have permanent embryonic regions meristems of stem cells.
