Biology Lecture 11
ANIMALS
Coral polyp, coral colony, sponge and sea fan
What is an animal?
Characteristics: eukaryotes, sexual/asexual reproduction, heterotrophic
Eukaryote:
-True nucleus
-Membrane-bound organelles
Heterotrophic “different feeding”
-Taking organic materials as energy and carbon source from others
-Modes of feeding: predators, herbivores, filter feeders, parasites, detritivores.
Omnivore, etc.
-Ex: cows, tigers, worm, etc.
Most animals have internal disgestion:
-Most internal processes to break down food (as opposed to fungi, which rely on
external digestion)
-Most have an internal gut that is continuous with the outside environment and
permits internal digestion of foods
Prokaryotes, Protists, Fungi and Plants are ALL heterotrophic
Multicellularity:
-Having multiple cells mean:
-A) specialization in the cells to carry out specific functions
-B) organisms can grow easily in size
-Large cells have maximum surface area to volume ratio
The smaller you are, the smaller the ratio 6:1
Large: 1.5:1
No Cell Walls
-How do they support their bodies?
Hydrostatic Skeleton
