Document Summary

The origins of the geneic code & trna properies (cont"d) The code is arbitrary, yet all organisms share the same geneic code! Therefore, the code is ixed by convenion, therefore we must all share a common ancestor, thus the code is. One dna strand has the same sequence as the mrna (messenger rna) Non-transcribed strand is the same as the mrna except with t"s not u"s (sense/coding strand) The other strand acts as the template for transcripion (anisense/template strand) Rna polymerase does the transcripion, binds to a dna sequence upstream of the transcript called the promoter: promoter = region of dna that iniiates transcripion of a paricular gene; Promoters are located near the transcripion start sites of genes, on the same strand and upstream on the dna (towards the 5" region of the sense strand) Doesn"t contain informaion to make a protein, just the informaion to tell the enzyme where to start (non coding informaion)
