Organic: growth of crops without the use of synthetic fertilizers, synthetic pesticides and essentially relying on natural means to control insects. Manure is an organic fertilizer: when it decomposes, it releases various kinds of nutrients that are needed for growth of crops: not enough manure to sustain all of the worlds crops. Justus von liebig (1803-1873): the first chemist to look at fertilizer scientifically. These numbers are represented on the fertilizer packaging. Fritz haber (late 1800s): found a way to combine nitrogen and hydrogen to make ammonia. Ammonia is sometimes pumped directly into the soil. Most of the time, it will be combined with nitric acid to form ammonium nitrate:
