Document Summary
Stomach specialized in digestion of large molecules (pouch: small intestine: (small refers to diameter, 1-2 inches) small intestine is very long: 20 ft (7m), digest molecules (cleavage of carbohydrates/proteins) To do this it requires an acidic medium - stomach works in acid. Stress: to neutralize the acid you need a base, acid+base = salt +water, different types of bases. Produces water, nacl, and co2 (burping: na+ hco3- sodium bicarbonate, nahco3+hcl = nacl+h2o+co2, sodium carbonate, the good: fast and cheap, the bad: acid rebound (stomach will produce more acid to get used to it) Systemic alkalosis: common sodium carbonate antacid: alka-seltzer. Sodium bicarbonate: baking soda: also contains asa (not the best situation) Causes diarrhea: mix them together: maalox (magnesium and aluminum hydroxide, no diarrhea / constipation (cancels out, maalox plus: simethicone (prevents the buildup of gas) Pushes all the small molecules of gas together so they"re easier to evacuate: hydrochloric acid build up, ulcer: attack of lining of stomach.
