Document Summary

It is comprised of the caudate nucleus, globus pallidus, putamen, substantia nigra, and subthalamic nucleus. The floor of the thalamus is the subthalamus nucleus, and the floor of the subthalamic nucleus is the substantia nigra. Basal ganglia: a higher order processing region within the cns that receives inputs from both the cerebral cortex and the brainstem. It lies under the cortex and the main movement system is projected through the pyramids. Inputs enter the caudate nucleus and the putamen, whereas outputs exit the globus pallidus which relay information back to the cerebral cortex and the brainstem. Globus pallidus: the more medial section of the triangular structure located lateral with respect to the thalamus. In a coronal section stain, you"ll notice that the globus pallidus is stained darker; this is because it contains more axons than the putamen. The putamen is more lateral with respect to the globus pallidus, however, both are medial to the insula.
