Pituitary produce fsh & lsh testes & ovaries feed back to intermediate neurons gnrh neuron. Lh to ovaries produce progesterone & estradiol. Gnrh made in hypothalamus pituitary portal system gnrh receptor on gonadotropes fsh. & lsh made in pituitary gonads, regulate gametogenesis & steroid hormone production (testosterone, estradiol, progesterone) Normally ve feedback to decrease gnrh secretion & mediate effects of gnrh on gonadotropes. Follicular phase & (separated by ovulation) luteal phase, menstruation back to follicular. Ovary has follicles (germ cell surrounded by layer of granulosis cells), women get full set of eggs. & follicles at 6 months of gestation, progressively lose in live, gone by ~51. Germ cells in follicles quiescent for most of life. Start growth: size of oocyte & proliferation of surrounding somatic cells, growth over period of months. At one point in growth, start make receptor for fsh. Increase in fsh levels at beginning of follicular phase, follicles making fsh receptors start accelerating growth (follicular selection)
