ANAT 381 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Passive Smoking, Adverse Drug Reaction, Dysplasia
Document Summary
5- environmental effects on embryogenesis- abnormal embryonic patterning & congenital anomalies and teratogens. Up to now, we"ve seen how things go, normally . Normal happens when all the genes are wild type (different alleles may be tolerated with slight variations). We start with 2 haploid cells, and end up with ~1 trillion diploid cells and some haploid. A lot is regulated at the level of genetic information. There is also a huge influence form the environment: sometimes, environmental influences can be disregarded by genes, but sometimes can really affect how genes behave and affect the development of the embryo. In 2006, 1 in 5 infant deaths were due to a birth defect. For every tissue, thousands of genes are involved. Congenital birth defects is the largest cause of infant/ child deaths. The miracle can be considered to be that such an intricate process does succeed lots of times.
