We should be suspicious of our feelings when trying to establish method. Must reject what is self evident today because it may have not been in the past: different from montaigne, have to put aside what is specific to our culture. After doing this we can judge our own culture. Culture can"t be evaluated on a moral ground. Withdraw from common sense, montaigne was very moral bound. Enabling one to free themselves from one"s own prejudices and to apply standard measures, and to then achieve a greater absolute truth than that which could have been found in studying their ( our ) civilization alone: 281. A question on difference of kind not on value. Worked as boaz"s assistant: half native half english. Taught him how to transcribe: labour relationship > paid work. Didn"t take notes during the story, would write down later. Would make amendments he thought represented the true versions of expression: active in the construction of this folklore.
