Document Summary

When remove all the leaves, the plant dies. When the tree bark is cut, the region above the cut is swollen with photosynthates. When the xylem is cut (inside of bark) but keep the bark, all leaves above the cut wilt. Conclusion: sugar transport and water transport is separated in plant; water is transported through the center of the plant stem (where xylem locate: cross sections of plant stems. Dicot plants-xylem at peripheral of the stem: xylem. Xylems are dead and hollow cells that stack on top of each other. The cells walls have small pits that allows water movement between cells. Pits are regulated by torus: a small bulge on pit membrane that can block the pit. Very important when the water column in xylem occasional breaks, such as during a strong wind. One or more xylem vessel is filled with air bubbles. Water has to detour the gas-filled vessel through adjacent vessels.
