BIOC 311 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Acetyl Group, Hydrophile, Ceramide
Document Summary
Kennedy pathway: formation of high e intermediate cdp-choline. Alternate pathway: cdp adds itself onto dag, not head group (like in kennedy pathway) Arachidonic acid is formed from linolenic acid, which is an essential fa meaning you need to it. However, you cannot synthesize linoleic acid because we do not have the right desaturase (only 3 in humans). Arachidonic is used to form prostaglandins, thromboxane, leukotriene, which are all eicosanoids, inflammatory mediators. Nsaids is an inhibitor of prostaglandin and thromboxane formation, but does not affect the formation of leukotrienes (exam question) e. g. aspirin prevent conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandins and thromboxane, but does not affect leukotriene formation. Where: found in membranes of brain and nerve cells (diseases affecting those lipids the first tissue affected are nerve cells) Sn3: carbon-carbon linkage to backbone, unsaturation between 2nd and 3rd carbon. Palmitoyl-coa + serine -> 3-ketoshinganine (do not need to know name) 3-ketoshinganine converted to shinganine by using nadph .
