General viewer outside: a sense in which they are educating a general outside viewer, bc it is an nfb film (already sort of national in its frame for who it speaks to) To humanize muslim women for a canadian audience. Probably not- a place where the subject position becomes very important. She didn"t seem to protest being separate from men, but she wanted to be separate in a respectful way (a nuanced way) A way to critique along with a commitment to the community/religion. In many countries overseas, getting rid of the hijab is a form of liberation. But in canada, getting rid of the hijab is a feeling of comfortable w one"s heritage. The case of canada is not uniform across the country (so in quebec when there was debate to not allow any religious showings in public spaces) Continuity of issues over the border as well.
