Zeus asked the personification of death, thanatos to change sisyphus into tartarus (tartarus is a remote place to get rid of immortals that you cannot kill because they are immortals). Sisyphus asks to understand how chains work before being chained. Thanatos gets locked with the chains while demonstrating sisyphus how to use them. As a result of this, thanatos is locked up in tartarus: no human can die. Ares, god of war, cannot kill people on the battlefield. Ares goes to tartarus himself and frees thanatos. He hands over sisyphus to thanatos and tells him to chain. This time, sisyphus is chained for good in. However, he foresees his capture that and tells his wife before hand to not make the proper sacrifices for the death of someone. When hades, who rules the underworld, realizes that his wife did not make the proper sacrifices tells sisyphus to go tell his wife to make the proper sacrifices.
