His symbols: lyre, laurel branch ( daphne" in greek) Origins are obscure: do not know how worship of him arose. Has the aspect of the good shepherd"/ sun god. His birth: his mother leto was persecuted by hera. In some variation, apollo and his twin are born on different islands; artemis was born on cyclades. The two quickly defend their mother from hera who sends a giant (both equipped with bows and arrows). He earns his position through his musical skill and joins the gods on olympus. Marsyas (satyr are dwellers of the wild): plays a flute made and thrown by athene. Challenges apollo: ultimately loses and is flayed. Challenges apollo who wins, does not punish pan because he is also a god.
