Geography, History and Citizenship
Security dictates how we live
Fertile and infertile (could we farm?) if we can, leads to a particular way of life
Two necessities of life: food and shelter
Farming will determine whether we survive (whether we have access to food
and sometimes shelter)
Rocky mountains: cant farm —> relied on hunting or fishing (infertile)
Great plains or interior planes: farming (wheat), flat, very fertile
Canadian shield: can’t farm on rock/tundra (it’s a shield)
—> Consequences of how the indigenous people lived, value of real-estate was low
Ohio valley: good land
Appalachian region: not good for farming
Two words we use to describe the indigenous people that can farm: nomadic,
sedentary (stay still)
Purpose of waterways: humans move, migrate (a way to get around with water)
—> Less friction than land (the highways of the past)
Every city has access to a waterway, railway or highway (transportation)
Where there is a waterway - attraction for people to settle
Sedentary: farmed (shelter) and hunted (for spirit and skill; a way of embracing nature,
a way of protecting the village) matriarchy (a system in society ruled by a
woman or women. Women have more power)
Nomadic: hunted and gathered, patriarchy (system in society in which the father
or eldest male is head of the family and descent is traced through the male
line. Men have more authority/power)
All were spiritual in different ways (spirit similar to religion). Fear of death
Animism and the circle of life extremely respected and had a purpose
Iroquois confederacy 1500: they formed a confederacy to avoid war and promote peace
How did the indigenous people cross the bearing straight? the ice age that was
retrieved and formed an ice bridge that the people were able to cross
European contact changed the lives of the indigenous people (not just the exchange of
culture and goods) gave them sicknesses, cures.. etc
Economic, political, religion answers why
Sciences answer how
Economic: Trade with Asia - spices and silk: spices needed to preserve food and silk as
it made comfortable clothing. Transportation/navigation (Ex. the Chinese rapids:
Lachine canal). More land = more power.
Emphasis away from church and more towards man and the world (the
individual started to matter)
Renaissance started in Venice, Italy (highest number of navigators, traders) it moved
quickly to Florence and then to Rome (closest thing to being a capital)
Columbus was so informed because he was Italian (the best 16th century explorers
were Italian)
The renaissance spread quickly and it spread North, therefore the northern countries
had a greater influence (economic and political influence)
As it spread North it changed, became more religious and less scientific
