One of sons appointed as high priest (aristocracy of 2nd temple judaism). Tradition of being descendants of zadok, (zadokites), high priest under king solomon. Need socioeconomic class of pp loyal to priest. Eg; bid on contracts to supply animals to temple. Sadducees were network of ppl connected w\high priest. Essenes and dead sea scroll group; too simplistic to say they are the same.
