Family in the west: nuclear family; mother, father , children. Family in chinese: include extended family; grandparents, niece, uncle + all generation. Distinct with a certain virtue and would pass down the lineage. E. g. if 1st ancestor is a scholar, the decedent should have characteristics of a scholar and practice scholarship. Its the decedents job to pass it down. Family and the ve relationship ( in order) Ruler subject (similar to father& son) ; Could be mother daughter, older sister younger sister. Western: two peoples choice, meet each other, fall in love, parents aren"t very involved. Of cial marriages are chosen from father of each side, or friends saying your next son will marry your next daughter. Could marry your ancestors even though they are not alive. Rst obligation to create a male heir. One of cial wife, several concubines to get male child. Concubine: show that you are wealthy, can support another women.
