•2/3 response topics
- 35 points each - not essays, it doesn’t have to have the essay structure, but you
will have questions and you will need to respond to those questions
-You need to answer all of them as well as possible, and you
-Final structure (21 Dec 9am- tentative exam schedule)
•6/7 I.D.s - 5 points
•4/5 Response topics - 10 points
•1/3 Essay Topics - 30 points
-Essay topics will be given on the last day of classes
-You cannot bring notes to the exam, but you can workout the structure at home
•There may be one item on the final that refers to the previous half of the course, but
mostly it will refer to what we cover AFTER the mid-term.
-Term Paper
-If you have a particular topic you’d like to right on, see Professor or T.A. to get it
approved.
•Or else, it will be a classic “compare and contrast” essay
-2 poems
•Read the poems and analyze them in the context of what was discussed during
lecture and conferences

-Conferences begin this week.
•For conferences, bring the Bible with you to class. You will be working with it
-Also bring the Walcott poem
-Be ready to come with questions and having read the material
Parker’s Back - O’Connor
-Southern Gothic
•Known for writing that has an Old Testament feels to it
•Lots of sudden violence that is unexpected
-The actual short story
•Features lots of tattoos - Writing as a body
-The story focuses on a man named O.E Parker
•Parker is someone who seems to have a yearning in him: one he can’t deal with
-He’s not seen as a heroic character, but does have a sense of wonder about him
(p.657 - important moment when he sees the tattooed man)
-His sense of wonder is activated by his sensory (touch, sight, feel)
•He has tattoos all over, and the only place he doesn’t have is his back
-He cannot see them on his back
-His wife Sarah Ruth
•She’s not like her namesakes necessarily
-She is pregnant quickly after they met
-She thinks churches are idolatry
-She does not like color
-She dislikes the tattoos on Parker’s body
•She likes her husband when he is invisible to her
-She likes her god this way as well
•The issue: how do they communicate? How do they understand one another?
