Giants, who are associated with danger and threat for aeneas quest, make the shield. Now they are associated with the creation of the shield, which will be protective in the future. The simile of vulcan to a working woman: what arts does and what is its function to the society. Virgil uses ekphrasis (e. g. yeats, ode on a grecian urn): the narrator stops and freezes to describe the arts, allowing us to pause and think about what is going on. But there are contrasts between the two shield. The shield in homer: includes everything in the world, all aspects of life => it is an analogue for an epic itself: epics is to contain many aspects of human experiences. But in the shield of aeneas, the view of the world is much more selective. It is much more focused into a line of history. It is like book 6 which lets us match through important moments of roman history.
