Document Summary
Our en- ergy consumption in the 1800s was relatively low, and has steadily risen since. We were mostly burn- ing wood, until coal was introduced. Coal consumption has been constant since it was discovered, but oil has steadily risen. Key point graph is dominated by fossil fuel. Geothermal energy is also important in some countries. Note how the population of the planet has greatly increased, as we have discovered new sources of energy. The middle graph displays the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere. It was relatively constant for the past few thousand years. Coinciding with the industrial revolution, the carbon dioxide concentration has dra- matically increased. The bottom graph shows the temperature of the planet in the past 200 years. The tem- perature is increasing, due to increases in greenhouse gas concentration. The map below shows the oil distribu- tion of the world. Canada, russia and the middle east are the major players in oil production.
