Document Summary

Transmission of neural impulses away from sense organs (receptors) toward cns via afferent fibers/nerves. Dendrities --> receptive areas that conduct electrical impulses to the cell body. Axon --> nerve fiber that carries electrical impulses awayfrom neuron cell body toward another neuron or effector organ. Schewan cells on axons: are along the nodes of the axon, allows for transmiission of electrical impulse to move quickly. The large the diameter of the axon, the greater the speed of the neural transmission:large myelinated nerve fibers conduct impulses more rapidly vs small non myelinated nerve fibers. Synapse:contact point between axon of one neuron and the dendrite of another neuron. The nervous system: structure and control of movement. Ability to conduct an action potential is dependent on several events. Depends on nerve membranes potential or electrical charge. At rest: rmp is negative (reflects differences in electrical charge between inside and outside) When negative --> neuron is polarized(-65 to -75 mv)
