We are born as who we are and gender is imposed on you
Another thing that came up in discussion was regarding bell hooks and debate about drag
Some see it as liberating some trivalizaing gender experiences
Serano text-
Resistance to norms
Different umbrellas and different norms for the umbrellas
Soe do’t at to see their geder ID as resistae
So she’s usig tras differetl tha others
Serano is almost using trans-ness as metaphor
Using ID as metaphor can be contentious
From authors we looked at-
These are how a lot of theorists fall into if your pro transgender theory or anti

Comes from African American people that can pass as white
Term picked up to mean being seen as the dominant group
People who are seen as straight for example
Stigma surrounging sex work
Thinking of them as a social, medical problem
Mental problem
Failure as a woman
Quote on slides
Most ties i our ultural iagiatio aout se orkers is that the’re oe hih is ot
true
Gender deviance- being a wrongful woman
Whereas even using sex worker word itself is a term of reclamation
Different models
Both sex workers advocate for decriminalization
Reason why is that part of it is a lack of trust in government to set up good laws that would be
beneficial for sex workers
Abolition- make it illegal- case in most cases
Causes a lot of har eause the do’t hae ork- a’t aess health care, no protection
Swedish model that harper pushed for-
Abolishion model but instead of punishing the worker they punish the client
This makes clients less comfortable to meet and pay so instead more of a rush
Hard to find safe place to meet
Even though itetio oes fro a good plae, does’t take ito aout hat se orkers
want and need
Important: listening to sex workers need instead of assuming
How to protect workers
How organizations like the UN try to deal with sex work
Sex trafficking is people being forced to have sex against their will
Different than people consenting to do this
So difference is choice
Sex trafficking and sex workers get muddied up so with legislation trying to shut down the
websites- intention is good but because sex work is illegal then sex workers have no more sex
place to meet clients
Language is important when speaking about sex work
The political efficacy as well as the problems arising from disagreement in terminology
Term sex work as opposed to prostitution
Part of the label of sex worker- term comes from 1978
