Document Summary

Archidamian war - named after the spartan king archidamius who lead the spartans in the peloponnesian war. At various points on side or the other would look like they were winning. The losing side would offer terms for peace but the winning side would reject it in favour for more. After pericles dies in 429 the athenian democracy is in a downturn. Leads the athenians down a much more violent path in the war. Once when the athenian had captured spartiates they refused peace terms from the spartans. Then they sign the peace of nicias (named for the politician who brokered the peace). Very typical peace treaty for classical greece. Turns the alliances back to the war. Ends the fighting but doesn"t end the tension - it"s like a reboot to the way things were before the war. The democracy does very stupid things now. Alcibiades is a prominent figure after the war.
