Rise of islam/conquest of christian-ruled lands largely brought relief for jews. Jews and muslims hav historically had far more in common than jews/christians. Howev, jewish life under muslim rule was not utopia. Especially when prosperity of islamic empire was in danger. To what extent can we see the influence of broader trends in the islamic world on jewish life under islam. @ time, jews r a diaspora ppl, increasingly spreading thru/out mediterranean, to east. Arab tribes in region were nomadic, mostly polytheist. Muhammad receives first revelation @ 40, rejection of polytheism. Claims that previous biblical prophets were prior warnings, revelations given to muhammad were corrected versions. Spreading islam was said to bring back religion of abraham. At muhammad"s death, his ideas spread rapidly. Flees from mecca to medina, b4 gaining allegiance of bedouin tribes and returning to mecca. Sometimes positive, when there is hope for conversion. But other jews allowed to exist if they gave supplies/goods.
