HIST 249 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Twilight Sleep, Postpartum Infections, Opiate
Document Summary
Childbirth: an event has become so completely medicalised. Aside from birth and death, there is no example that will involve so many people at some point in their lives having a medically-supervised happening. Over 90% of the children born in canada on any given day are born in a hospital. Eugenics and other issues get so tangles together when we talk about women"s issues especially pertaining to childbirth. It is becoming more and more complicated with the choices women and men have to make. These technologies would be monopolised by high income women without the subsidy creating a two tier system of childbirth. If you do fund it, it means that you are taking funding away from something else. In 1969, almost 100% of births in the usa happened in hospitals but a lot has happened since then eg: second wave feminism, internet, etc.
