The conquest of mexico-tenochtitlan; took about two years, led by cortes. He had 11 ships and 450 men headed towards mexico. There are two spaniards integrated in the mayan community; geronimo de aguilar mayan- He arrived in an area called potonchan; gets food from the mayan communities cortes forcefully goes after their resources, resulted in the first battle on the mainland. The spaniards win: 12 women, including do a maria who spoke nahuatl and mayan could communicate. The aztecs met them at the coast to gain information met the governor of the aztecs: they didn"t see cortes as a powerful aspect of another nation. Cortes meets the people from cempoala on the coast. The totonacs, recently conquered by the aztecs, agree to ally with the spaniards; they help with carrying equipment (cannons and crossbows) Cortes spends three months on the coast preparing. On the way to the coast he makes more allies and gets help with food and carriers.
