Audiencia of guatemala (most of central america: guatemala, part of mexico, honduras, el salvador, Took a long time to develop no ideal economic environment like the spaniards wanted not many silver/gold mines in the area; most of the area is tropical forest, unsuitable for the plantation economy. Colonising west coast was hard tropical diseases (yellow fever) reluctant to establish themselves along those coasts. The indigenous populations in the areas are very small; not always sedentary; the colonisers judge that they are unable to be used for plantations etc. The value of the region is determined by native people and the environment. Produce cacao, maize, cochineal (bug that gives red dye), wool, wheat, cotton, textile, silver; attract european investors. In this area encomienda is the first to arrive; displace indigenous peoples to the islands (with lands difficult to cultivate); pushed out of the areas where the lands were the best.
