Document Summary
Small community looked upon with scorn by zionists. 60,000 jews, most from eastern europe come to palestine. Most not zionists, only 12% come for ideological reasons. 88% middle aged, small shopkeepers seeking better living/safety from russian violence/pogroms/legal discrimination. 70% of this group end up leaving, return to eastern europe. Ideological zionists try to purchase land and est settlements. 30 jewish ag settlements, 700 families, about 5,000 people total. No farming experience, shitty land, high mortality rate, not getting enough cash from eastern europe zionists. Again, mostly not ideological, same econ/safety concerns. Most want to move to cities and continue in trades. So about 3,000 young, single, atheist ideological immigrants who stay. See early ideological leaders arrive at this time. Immigrate at end of 1800s in tens of thousands. Women still expected to uphold certain fem ideals but at the same time ideals are abandoned.
