Document Summary

Detailed description of the patient"s history of acquisition & pattern of use for each language. Necessary to establish patient"s previous relative fluency in respective languages. Part a of bat: 50-item branching questionnaire on the patiens t history of bilingualism ttttttttttttt. Grammaticality judgments of sentences containing contrastive features from other language spoken by patient. Paradis (1994) proposes that the recovery in bilingual aphasics is closely related to the memory systems involved. Patients perform better in the language spoken the least before the insult (paradis 1989, 2001) = can use metalinguistic knowledge: lexical performance is affected in both cases. Interestingly, structural distance between languages has no effect on recovery from aphasia, while being major contributor of transfer effect in therapy treatment. Paradis claims that this is because recovery of linguistic abilities has to do with recovery of implicit knowledge, while therapy taps metalinguistic knowledge that can be used for both languages as long as they are structurally similar.
