Morphemesome morphemes are individual words on their own (e. g. , cat") Some morphemes need to be attached to other morphemes to create words (e. g. , s" as indicator of plural) Arbitrary: it is just through historical accidents that cause us to create different words. Don"t let your knowledge of english cloud your observation of other languages. The same morpheme wills show up in different phonetic disguises. Root root: the form of a word that we attach certain types of affixed on when we are building a new word (derivational-type entries) Base: the part of a word that some other morpheme is being attached to.
