Document Summary

There is some sort of communication between the two language systems. Has an implication on the methodology (you need to set up experiments to see if there really is transfer between languages) Occurs mostly at the phonological, semantic, and morphosyntactic levels, but can also occur at the pragmatic level. Because we know that the developmental stages that monolingual go through in acquisition differ rom language to language, there is a lot of cross linguistic similarities but there are also cross linguistic differences that are tied to language type. E. g. , in some languages, inflection on verbs and nouns emerge at a much earlier time than in other language. Children learning this language will see acceleration in learning the inflection on verbs and nouns in their other language (or delay, if that is the case for the first language) It may be very hard to tell whether there is one phonology or two in the earliest stages (v&t"s stage 1).
