Went over previous lecture and assignment until [45:00]. In english, embedded clauses (ec) can be used as: Adverbial modifiers: bob kissed mary [after he shaved]. Conjuncts: [bob is hairy] and [he"s dirty]. Different types of complement clauses in english: We started with prosody, then looked at one word stage, then two/multiple word stage, then sentence phase (syntactic analysis, x-bar theory [head-initial/head-final], syntax), then we started talking about important syntactic concepts (word order, case, subject). Study looking at embedded clauses in children (1981) Who there are 51 preschool children, a pretty good size, who were divided into groups in terms of age. Read a sentence to a kid, the kid had to repeat the sentence. For is obligatory when introducing a clause, when the clause is a subject: Clause subject: [for/*0 bob to pass the test] would be a miracle. Clause object: i think [ (*for) 10 is not cold. ]
