LING 355 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Babbling, Sentence Clause Structure, Speech Perception
Document Summary
Other factors that suggest that language has a biological basis: Not necessarily the same age for every child. Occurs (and occurs inevitably) regardless of upbringing (with a few exceptions) It doesn"t matter what language you are learning as a first language learner. There are differences between the languages but the order of acquisition usually stays the same. Areas of human brain are specifically devoted to language. In the majority of people, the language areas of the brain are found in the left hemisphere. The fact that there are language areas in the brain suggests that there is something biological going on. In addition to language milestones, children also go through stages of motor development (sitting up, crawling, etc. ). However, there isn"t a necessary connection between them (for example, you don"t have to be able to sit in order to talk, or to walk before uttering complex sentences).
