LING 360 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Natural Number, Empty Set, Subset
Document Summary
Sets are abstract mathematical object they do not exist, we construct them in our minds. Don"t exist in space and time just like numbers don"t exist in space and time. Sets may have as members things which are either abstract or concrete. Sets are collections of objects, real or abstract. Members of sets have names (a, b, c, etc. ) It doesn"t matter which order you but the elements in. It doesn"t matter if you name the same thing twice. This type of notation is called list notation. Other type of notation (set building notation/set abstraction notation): {x : x is a chair in this room} This means you are talking about a set. Using lower case letters a, b, c or x, y, z. Permitted to refer to things which are not sets but may also refer to things that are sets. These letters are unmarked there is not only one thing to which they can refer.
