Successful linguistic communication requires that the communicators share: Beliefs that the speaker and the hearer are cooperating in the common goal of successful communication. Beliefs about what can be taken for granted. What is conveyed: bill owns just one cat. All of these things play a role in how it is we understand language. The landlord would certainly be surprised to observe the day bill moves into his apartment that he owns twenty cats.
