General overview of how major cultures in the world think about language: There were texts written in a very early period. These books are compiled and added to over time. Grammars and pronunciations change by the time you get to the han dynasty. Beginning of the study of grammar: people had some methods put together to study the earlier classics of chinese civilization. Started in the han dynasty to understand linguistic changes. Study of relationship between words and reality: starts in the zhou dynasty. Issues in semantics as we know today were starting to be raised. Indus valley civilization: 3000 bce - 1700 bce. Gradually came to dominate and imposed their culture. They spoke in a language called sanskrit (in which they carried out their rituals)
