MGCR 222 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Job Satisfaction, Job Design, Organizational Commitment
Document Summary
An organization is a consciously coordinated social unit, composed of a group of peo- ple, that functions on a relatively continuous basis to achieve a common goal or set of goals. More organizations expect individuals to be empowered, with employees being asked to take on more responsibility than ever before. Researchers with strong humanistic values argue that satisfaction is a legitimate objective of an organization. They believe that organizations should be responsible for providing employees with jobs that are challenging and intrinsically rewarding. At the same time that managers are being held responsible for employee satisfaction and happiness, they are also being asked to share more of their power. Empowerment means managers are giving employees more responsibility for what they do. In the process, managers are learning how to give up control, and employees are learning how to take responsibility for their work and make appropriate decisions.
